ABOUT
In Brief
In 1992, Nina Rycroft graduated with a diploma in graphic design and worked
as a designer in Sydney and London before turning her hand to illustration,
her first picture book 'Little Platypus', (Nette Hilton 2000), received a
CBCA notable book in 2001 and is currently listed on the NSW Premier Reading
challenge.
In Detail
Nina's illustrations for 'Boom Bah!' (Phil Cummings, 2008) were brought to
life in a stage production that toured Australia (2008), Korea, Singapore
and New Zealand (2009) as part of a literacy initiative between 'Windmill'
and the 'Advertiser', 'Little Big Book Club'.
In 2009, Nina saw the completion of 4 years work in her book titled
'Ballroom Bonanza'. Inspired by her children's great grandfather, Tommy
Jones (band master at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool from 1947 - 1978).
2010 marks Nina's international debut, ABRAMS international edition of
'Ballroom Bonanza' and Kane Miller's first American edition of 'Boom Bah!'
Closer to home, Nina has enjoyed collaboration with Margaret Wild
illustrating 'No More Kisses' as well as illustrating Sherryl Clark's 'Now I Am Bigger'.
In August 2010, Nina moved to Auckland with her husband and two children
Charlie (10) and Jayme (6), she now resides in Devonport. Other picture
books include 'Tricky Little Hippo' (Jane Bowring, 2005) and 'Elephant
Dance' (Sue Whiting, 2007).
LET'S CHAT
I enjoy talking about my illustration work, explaining visual story-telling
- showing how I work with the words to tell help tell a story. I love
discussing the process that I use to illustrate a picture book and how I
work with an author and a publisher. You'll get a window into my studio,
where I'm more than happy to show you around. My paints and brushes,
sketches, and original artwork help explain why it can take me anywhere
between three months or three years to illustrate a book. I love to draw, so
don't forget to bring your paper and a pencils.
