The great chocolate cake bake-off was included in the Storylines list of notable books for 2007. Nicholas has never thought he’s much good at anything – until he discovers he can bake the most amazing cakes. But are they amazing enough to get him into the finals of The Great Chocolate Cake Bake-Off?
Enemy at the gate is set in 1936, when a deadly disease holds New Zealand in terror. Known as infantile paralysis, or polio, the disease appears to strike at random. Caught up in the confusion and fear, 12-year-old Tom finds refuge in his dream: to run like Jack Lovelock. This book was shortlisted for the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards 2009 in the Junior Fiction section.
A girl called Harry is a book about growing up and learning how to make friends. Harry (short for Harriet) is supposed to be having her best year ever at school, but it's not turning out that way. Her brilliantly creative projects aren't always appreciated, and neither is her wild imagination. Then Mallory, the new girl with the unpronounceable surname, turns up, and Harry's imagination really takes off.
In 2010, Philippa was shortlisted for three different prizes:
the Text Prize for Young Adult and Children's Writing (http://textpublishing.com.au/news/post/text-prize-shortlist-announced/
the Playmarket Plays for the Young Competition, for which she was runner-up http://www.playmarket.org.nz/opportunities/plays_for_the_young_competition
and the Royal Society of New Zealand Manhire Prize for Creative Science Writing (non-fiction section) http://www.royalsociety.org.nz/programmes/competitions/manhire-prize/2010/.
